What is Complex regional pain syndrome?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that usually develops after an injury, surgery, or trauma, but the pain is more severe and long-lasting than expected. It often affects an arm, leg, hand, or foot and is associated with nerve hypersensitivity, abnormal inflammation, and changes in blood flow. CRPS is not just a local problem — it involves nervous system dysfunction, including the brain and spinal cord.

Common Symptoms Include

  • Severe, persistent, and disproportionate pain in a limb

  • Burning, stabbing, or throbbing sensations

  • Swelling and stiffness

  • Changes in skin color (red, blue, pale) and temperature (hot or cold)

  • Shiny, thin, or sweaty skin

  • Hair and nail growth changes

  • Weakness, tremors, or loss of function in the affected area

  • Heightened sensitivity (even light touch or clothing can be painful)

What causes it?

The exact cause of CRPS is not fully understood, but it likely involves a combination of:

  • Nervous system sensitization (the brain and spinal cord amplifying pain signals)

  • Abnormal inflammatory responses after injury or surgery

  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction, affecting circulation, sweating, and skin temperature

  • Neuroplastic changes in the brain, where pain maps become overly sensitive

Not everyone who has an injury develops CRPS, suggesting genetic, immune, and psychological factors may play a role.

 

Possible contributors include:

  • Injury, fracture, or surgery

  • Nerve damage or irritation

  • Stress and emotional trauma

  • Central sensitization (brain and spinal cord amplifying signals)

  • Reduced movement and fear of using the affected limb

  • Autonomic nervous system dysregulation
